Crimestoppers in the UK is a charity, independent of the police and government. It is funded by a combination of a grant from the government and charitable donations from the corporate sector.
Governed by a Board of Trustees, it has a full time staff of 55, split between its Central Office and the 24/7 Bureau where the calls are taken. There are 35 regional volunteer Boards who cover the whole of the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. These Boards work with the police, local businesses and the media to identify the types of crime that are the highest priority, publicise the number and run local campaigns. There are some 600 volunteers.
Crimestoppers in the UK offers rewards although less than 2% of callers ask for them; rewards are generally small, the maximum being £1000, though for some serious and violent crimes we offer rewards up to £10,000.
Crimestoppers in the UK is very successful, every week on average, one person is arrested and charged with murder based on information passed to the police.
As well as running the anonymous telephone line operation, Crimestoppers works in schools, educating children about the nature of crime, and how to make the right choices about not getting involved. We also work in minority communities, encouraging people to support the police and their communities in the fight against crime.
